North Texas Range Riders September 30 2016

Cooler weather hit Texas this weekend! Trail riders were ready to get out and enjoy the nice
temperatures. The North Texas Range Riders hosted a weekend camping trip at the LBJ Grasslands Decatur Texas and cowgirls and cowboys began coming out Friday afternoon Peggie "Redhorse" Kimberlinand her mule Mary got their usual spot and served as the welcoming committee for the other riders. Barbara Jelly and Socks from Washington won the longest distance award as they have been traveling all over Texas since August, but this was their first trip to the grasslands. Geri Bischoff and her compadres Helen Cadenhead and Edgar came up from the Austin area and this was their first trip to the grasslands and I believe they will all be back .We had one okie in the bunch- Camellia Foster. Camellia is your huckleberry if you want to ride Duncan Lake in Duncan Oklahoma she helped  establish the trails there and knows all the hidden spots.

Helen had a great campfire going the first evening and everyone sat around having a great time telling old stories and making a few up I am sure.

Sometime in the middle of the night, Socks decided to get out of his pen and go for a stroll and visit with the other Texas horses and mule. Around 6:30 am I heard someone say "loose mule" and I immediately thought of Rooster and out of the trailer I went. Rooster has been know to get out himself but he was in his pen for a change and Socks was the guilty culprit. The multipurpose tool came out to wrangle him up. These special tools can be purchased from Charlie Bowers for $65.00 and all proceeds go to the Knickerbocker Community Center building fund.

Later that morning we started out down the yellow trail with 12 riders. The yellow trail is the most popular trail at 9.4 miles long with two wooden bridges and the famous pine trees for a lunch break.
Diana Eades was our photographer and I'm sure she got a shot of everyone coming over the bridge. Some riders stopped to see the old grave site that is right outside the pines. We had a great break under the pines and only saw one bow hunters he was leaving. We did pick up a pine needle hitchhiker there but that is another rabbit hole and not my story to tell.

That evening we had a great potluck dinner and Vicky Shewmake and her daughter joined us for dinner and camping. Janet Rowe joined the club but could not stay although  she left her baked beans for the potluck and we cleaned the bowl. Thank you Janet. Bryan came out and ate with us and those of us that was still up got to see the International Space Station as is crossed the western sky.

Sunday we did a short ride with the ones that had to get on the road. Afterwards, the three mule riders  went out again for a 12 mile ride. We hit all the trails except the blue. I am sure if we had a map of our trip it would look like we had been drinking. It was great weekend with the North Texas Range Riders and fun riding at the LBJ Grasslands.
